A sensory immersion in the natural riches of Mauritius

Imagine yourself on a bicycle, riding along the vast blue Indian Ocean, carried by the sea spray and the dazzling light of Mauritius. The road hugs the coastline, offering spectacular views from the very first few kilometres: steep cliffs, secret coves and vast stretches of turquoise water stretching as far as the eye can see. The sea breeze accompanies your efforts, mixing the scent of salt with the fragrance of tropical fruits. According to many cyclists, this coastal stretch is one of the most beautiful on the island.

Gradually, the route leaves the sea behind and heads inland. The road begins to wind its way through plantations, tropical orchards and lush green groves. The atmosphere changes subtly: the tumult of the ocean fades away, replaced by a soothing calm, while the terrain becomes more challenging.

The climb to Chamarel is a highlight of the route. A small village nestled in the hills, Chamarel is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. As the kilometres pass, cyclists find themselves in the heart of dense, unspoilt nature: ebony trees, Arabica coffee plantations and undergrowth teeming with endemic plants create an almost unreal setting.

Once you arrive on the plateau, the view is breathtaking. The famous Seven Coloured Earths reveal themselves, with their ochre, red, purple and yellow dunes contrasting beautifully with the deep green of the surrounding forest. Nearby, the majestic Chamarel waterfall, some 100 metres high, plunges into a lush green setting imbued with freshness and mystery.

Biodiversity is omnipresent throughout the route. Rare birds such as the pink pigeon and the echoparakeet, restored ebony forests home to endangered species: every turn of the pedals bears witness to the region’s strong commitment to the conservation and respect of its natural heritage.

Finishing this cycle race inland, in the heart of the Mauritian highlands, brings the journey to a close on an intimate and majestic note. More than just a sporting challenge, this route is a true sensory immersion, a journey between blue and green, between ocean and altitude — a vibrant tribute to the wild and contrasting beauty of Mauritius.
